Teaching at a Girls’ Weekend

In mid-November, I woke up early on a Friday morning to teach. I usually teach group classes in the evening, so if I’m waking up early to teach you know it’s for an event. I had the day planned: my boyfriend would pick me up and we would drive to the neighborhood outside of Cashiers, NC where the Air BnB was. I had my props and mats all packed and ready to go. I would arrive to the Air BnB and meet my students for the first time. The photographer would arrive, and we would set up class on the deck outside.

Unfortunately, the temperatures dropped into the 40s and we had to practice inside. The basement space was very cozy, carpeted which providing some padding for knees and an element of safety for my challenging poses. My boyfriend dropped me off and I went inside to meet my students. It took me a few trips from the car to bring all the props I needed. I was only teaching to three students, however as a result I had enough props to bring for all three and my load was heavier than usual for an event.

I got set up downstairs and fretted about the space. The photographer was on his way and this was not the picturesque outdoor yoga class I had hoped to have him capture.

John David arrived, and I introduced him to my students and brought him downstairs. We went over my class plan, and we shifted things around and closed doors to make the space my photogenic. Lucky for me, John David is talented and was able to make the most of the space.

Once class started I felt better about the space. John David was able to stay on the periphery of the small room and take photos from there. I got into the flow of my class plan and my nerves disappeared.

I taught in my signature Spectrum Yoga style, and it seems the women participating had a good experience. We ended class with some fun inversion practice, including a headstand from one of the students (pictured above). I felt a lot of fulfillment from teaching a mixed levels class, as another of the students had only practiced yoga once before!
