Feeling the Love

With three days to go before Valentine’s Day, it can be tempting for some of us to think about what we don’t have. For some of us, Valentine’s Day and other holidays remind us of love lost or bring up grief. In these times, a yoga and meditation practice can bring us back in touch with both gratitude and the clarity to pursue our dreams and goals.

Many motivational speakers, such as Tony Robbins and Joe Dispenza, teach that in order to achieve what we dream of, we have to first define it. Tony Robbins teaches that a lot of us fail to achieve goals because we haven’t defined and visualized those goals. He practices and even shares a 10-minute morning priming exercise to create the ideal conditions for a fulfilling day. He writes, “adopting the practice of goal visualization puts control of your morning and your life back into your hands”.

For some of us, we’ve lost touch with both gratitude for what we have and also a clear idea of what we want to create for our lives. This is where yoga comes in. In an asana practice, we go within on our mat while practicing poses and breathing. This allows us to get in touch with deeper parts of ourselves; the parts that DO know what we authentically want for our lives. I recommend journaling for 5 minutes following your home yoga practice to put these valuable insights on paper.

Increased gratitude is one of the benefits of a regular yoga and meditation practice

A meditation practice can also connect us with deeper aspects of ourselves. Meditation specifically aids in developing focus. Visualization requires focus, even if it’s just creating a vision board of what we want for ourselves for the next year. The priming exercise linked above also requires focus, and can be combined with seated meditation in the morning to set the tone for the day.

For a comprehensive course on developing a yogic meditation practice, see my teacher Kristine Kaoverii Weber’s The Science of Yogic Meditation. You can also schedule a consultation with me to discuss how I can help you meet your home practice goals! I hope you feel the love on Valentine’s Day!
